The term acromegaly refers to an abnormal growth of the extremities. The term is composed of:

- megal(o) or (mega) — a root word meaning enlargement

Acromegaly is a condition caused by hypersecretion of the pituitary growth hormone after maturity and characterized by enlargement of the extremities of the skeleton — the nose, jaws, fingers, and toes.
