Exercise 10

The term acromegaly refers to an abnormal growth of the extremities. The term is composed of:

  • acro — a combining from meaning at the extremities
  • megal(o) or (mega) — a root word meaning enlargement
  • y — a suffix ending meaning characterized by

Acromegaly is a condition caused by hypersecretion of the pituitary growth hormone after maturity and characterized by enlargement of the extremities of the skeleton — the nose, jaws, fingers, and toes.
