Hematopoietic Neoplasms II

This module covers the Hematopoietic Database and Manual and contains many case scenarios that will illustrate how to use the Hematopoietic Database and Manual to determine number of primaries, primary site, histology, EOD, Summary Stage, mets at dx information and diagnostic confirmation.

This module is not intended to serve as a clinical practice guidelines.

See Hematopoietic: Module 1 for basic information about Hematopoietic histologies.

The Hematopoietic Database and Manual

Hematopoietic neoplasms can be either very easy to abstract, or very complex. They do not present like Solid Tumors, so the rules for determining multiple primaries are different.

Never apply Solid Tumor Rules to hematopoietic neoplasms or hematopoietic rules to solid tumors. While both sets of rules share the same intent, their structure and application differ significantly.

The Hematopoietic database is the FIRST place a registrar needs to go when they receive a pathology report or a clinical diagnosis in an electronic medical record. DO NOT start with the Hematopoietic Manual. The Hematopoietic database gives relevant information about the Hematopoietic neoplasms, including common (or default) primary sites, histologies, reportability, transformations, and additional histologies that are determined to be the same primary, and diagnostic confirmation.
