Incidence and Mortality

Worldwide, colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer. In 2022, there were an estimated 1.93 million new cases of colorectal cancer and 903,859 deaths.

  • New cases of colon cancer: 107,320.
  • New cases of rectal cancer: 46,950.
  • Deaths: 52,900 (colon and rectal cancers combined).

Colon cancer is highly treatable and often curable disease when localized to the bowel. Surgery is the primary form of treatment and results in cure in approximately 50% of patients. However, recurrence following surgery is a major problem for non-localized disease and is often the ultimate cause of death.
