Lab Studies
CBC count
Alkaline Phosphatase
Elevated alkaline phosphatase level may indicate metastatic disease to the bone or liver.
Liver Function Tests
Elevation of liver function tests (aspartate aminotransferase [AST], alanine aminotransferase [ALT]) may indicate metastatic disease to the liver.
Total Protein and Albumin
Total protein and albumin levels provide information concerning the general health and nutritional status of the patient.
Creatinine Level
A creatinine level is necessary prior to initiation of any treatment (many chemotherapy treatments may damage the kidneys).
LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase)
Although LDH is not specific for melanoma, it may be useful at diagnosis and also in the follow-up care of patients with melanoma. An elevated LDH at diagnosis or upon follow-up may indicate distant metastases, especially in the lung and liver. In the AJCC 6th Edition staging system, LDH level is included in the staging system for melanoma.
