Hematologic Transplant and Endocrine Procedures

See the current version of the SEER Program Coding Manual under Reporting Guidelines, Section VII: First course of therapy, for complete coding instructions for this data item.

Endocrine procedures for female breast cancer patients involve the removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes WITH or WITHOUT the uterus. This procedure is called either prophylactic ovary removal or prophylactic oophorectomy.

The ovaries are the main source of the hormones estrogen and progesterone. If a female breast cancer patient is premenopausal, a prophylactic oophorectomy (WITH or WITHOUT hysterectomy) may be recommended to lessen the risk of a second cancer in one of these sites, or to lessen the burden of the breast cancer.

In addition, premenopausal or postmenopausal women may be high risk and recommended for a prophylactic oophorectomy if they tested positive for BRCA1 or BRCA2 or have a strong family history of breast cancer, ovarian cancer, or both.
