Hormones

See the current version of the SEER Program Coding Manual under Reporting Guidelines, Section VII: First course of therapy, for complete coding instructions for the hormone data items.

Hormone therapy is administered as a way to add, block or remove the action or production of a person’s own hormones. Hormones are commonly used to treat breast cancers that are ER/PR+ or HER2+. Hormone agents can be given alone or as part of a regiment combined with chemotherapy agents. Many of them are specifically used for metastatic breast cancer. Hormone treatment can last up to 10 years. Patient takes this medicine at home on a daily basis.

See SEER*Rx Interactive Antineoplastic Drugs Database (cancer.gov) for more information on the specific Hormones drugs for breast cancer. These can either be individual drugs, or part of a regimen.

Document hormone details in NAACCR Item # 2650: Text-Hormones.
