Reconstruction

See the current version of the SEER Program Coding Manual under Reporting Guidelines, Section VII: First course of therapy for complete coding instructions for this data item.

Breast reconstruction is often done at the same time as surgery, especially when a mastectomy is performed. Reconstruction for the bilateral breast is recorded in a different data item.

  • Breast Reconstruction [NAACCR Item # 1335]
    • This data item is coded for a reconstruction procedure immediately following the resection of the breast (same operative session).
      • This data item is not coded if the patient has reconstruction in a different operative session.
    • This data item is restricted to only the ipsilateral breast.

There are several different types of reconstruction

  • Tissue expander (Note: These are temporary and will be removed and replaced with a permanent implant)
  • Implant placement (permanent implant)
  • Oncoplastic tissue rearrangement, reduction, mastopexy, and/or flaps
  • Breast conserving resection and reconstruction performed with skin flaps, parenchymal flap or adjacent tissue transfer
  • Mastectomy reconstruction with skin flap
  • Deep inferior epigastric perforator (DEIP) flap
