Breast reconstruction is often done at the same time as surgery, especially when a mastectomy is performed. Reconstruction for the bilateral breast is recorded in a different data item.
- Breast Reconstruction [NAACCR Item # 1335]
- This data item is coded for a reconstruction procedure immediately following the resection of the breast (same operative session).
- This data item is not coded if the patient has reconstruction in a different operative session.
- This data item is restricted to only the ipsilateral breast.
- This data item is coded for a reconstruction procedure immediately following the resection of the breast (same operative session).
There are several different types of reconstruction
- Tissue expander (Note: These are temporary and will be removed and replaced with a permanent implant)
- Implant placement (permanent implant)
- Oncoplastic tissue rearrangement, reduction, mastopexy, and/or flaps
- Breast conserving resection and reconstruction performed with skin flaps, parenchymal flap or adjacent tissue transfer
- Mastectomy reconstruction with skin flap
- Deep inferior epigastric perforator (DEIP) flap
