Hormones

Hormone therapy for Prostate cancer is very common and used in several different ways.

  1. For patients who choose a radical prostatectomy and the tumor burden is large, hormone therapy may be given prior for a month or two to shrink the tumor.
    1. This is NOT neoadjuvant therapy. The intent of hormone therapy is not curative.
  2. Used to prevent cancer progression while the patient decides on which treatment option they will go with. Such decisions can take up to 8 months.
  3. Used as a radiosensitizer prior to radiation.
  4. Used as primary therapy for Stage III or Stage IV patients until there is disease progression.
  5. Used to treat patients who are symptomatic.
