Radiation Therapy
See the current version of the SEER Program Coding Manual under Reporting Guidelines, Section VII: First Course of Therapy, for complete coding instructions for the radiation data items.
External-beam radiation therapy (EBRT) with or without hormonal therapy: This treatment is used for curative intent. This type of radiation will be delayed for 4-6 weeks if a TURP is done. If a patient has bulky disease that is still confined to the prostate (locally advanced disease), hormonal therapy may be added as well.
Patients who had a radical prostatectomy with positive margins may have adjuvant radiation therapy.
Interstitial Brachytherapy: This radiation procedure may be given for patients who have local prostate cancer with low disease burden. The implantation is performed as outpatient surgery. This procedure maintains potency at about 85% or greater. Longer term follow up is needed for these patients.
