Coding metastasis for lung is based on several different factors

  • No evidence of metastatic disease
    • Default to no metastatic disease when there is no documentation on the metastatic workup.
  • Pericardial effusion or pleural effusion, separate tumor nodule in contralateral lung
  • Single distant lymph node
  • Single extrathoracic metastasis in single organ
  • Multiple extrathoracic organs in a single organ system
    • Skeleton is considered one organ. So, if multiple bones were involved, it would still be considered one organ
  • Multiple extrathoracic metastasis in multiple organ system

See SEER*RSA, Lung for the current version of EOD and complete coding instructions for the Lung schema.
