The Revised Hematopoietic Module for the SEER Training Website
In order to keep this version as current as possible, resource links are used frequently. Some of these links are for different manuals used within the registry field (i.e. SEER Coding and Staging Manual), and other links are for clinical resources (i.e., NCCN guidelines, NCI PDQ). These links are provided to guide registrars in better understanding of the cancer, standard treatment, and other relevant information. These clinical resources are updated on a regular basis.
Blood Cancer | American Cancer Society
- The mission of the American Cancer Society is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
- This website does contain specific information about types of cancer that registrars might find helpful. The link provided above goes directly to information about Hematopoietic neoplasms (Blood cancer).
Leukemia—Health Professional Version - NCI or Lymphoma—Health Professional Version - NCI
- The National Cancer Institute’s PDQ’s provide extensive information about the diagnosis, staging, and treatment for specific cancers. This information is updated regularly as new information is provided. This is an excellent resource for registrars to learn more about a particular cancer.

Extent of Disease (EOD) 2018 - SEER
Note: Link goes to the main page for SEER*RSA (EOD). Once there, click on the SEER*RSA link to access the current version of EOD.
- EOD is used to collect the building blocks of stage (tumor extension, regional lymph nodes, and mets). Only SEER reporting facilities are required to code EOD.
- This is the link to PDF versions of the SSDI and Grade manuals which are found on the NAACCR website. In addition, an electronic version of the SSDIs and Grade are always available. (The electronic version of the SSDIs and Grade are also in Registrar Staging Assistant (SEER*RSA) - SEER)
SEER Program Coding Manual
Note: Link goes to the Registry Operations page. Once there, click on the SEER Program Coding Manual link to access the current version of the SEER Program Coding Manual.
- The SEER Program Coding and Staging Manual includes data item descriptions, codes, and coding instructions for all the data items that the SEER program requires. Links throughout this document are provided to specific sections of the SEER manual to help new registrars navigate their way through it.
SEER*Rx - Cancer Registrar's Interactive Antineoplastic Drugs Database - SEER Tools
- SEER*Rx was developed as a one-step lookup for coding oncology drug and regimen treatment categories in cancer registries.
Hematopoietic Project - SEER Registrars
Note: Link goes to the Registry Operations page. Once there, click on the Hematopoietic link to access the current version of the Hematopoietic Manual and Database.
- The purpose of the Hematopoietic Manual and Database is to determine the number of primaries to abstract, primary site and the histology to code. All standard setters require the use of Hematopoietic Manual rules.
- Summary Stage is the most basic way of categorizing how far a cancer has spread from its point of origin and has been in use since the 1970s. Summary Stage is also the staging system used for surveillance purposes (SEER and NPCR).
